Ministry in the Community
Bingo Parties for Nursing
Homes - Volunteers gather small
prizes and take refreshments. At the nursing home, they aid residents who play
bingo and enjoy the time with each other and with the volunteers.
Ingathering - On the first Wednesday in December, volunteers from the
churches of the Bethlehem/Easton Mission District gather at one congregation to
assemble health kits that are given to local agencies. Each year, St. Peter's
task is to provide 150 personal care items for the kits.
Gracedale Visitation - On the fourth Wednesday of each month, volunteers
travel to Nazareth, PA to visit with any St. Peter's members who reside at
Gracedale, as well as all the residents of our assigned floor. The residents
enjoy the visits of the volunteers and the treats that the volunteers provide.
Southside Ministries - This Ecumenical ministry is run by five churches
in South Bethlehem. Some of the opportunities for service include:
Meal Center Volunteers - St. Peter's volunteers cook and serve a hot noon
meal on the third Friday of each month to anyone who is hungry. Meals are served
at the New Bethany Ministries Center.
Thrift Shop - Volunteers sort clothing and stock shelves at the shop
housed at the Cathedral Church of the Nativity. The clothing is then made
available at no cost or low cost to those in need.
SSM KIDS - This two-week long summer program is for children from age 4
through middle school. Singing, arts & crafts, and Bible study are used to
produce a play which is performed for the community at the end of the two week
program.
Youth Ministry - Dances, bowling, tennis, basketball and more are offered
to youth in middle and high school. Events are held at the five participating
churches.
Neighborhood Festival - Each year on an August Saturday, Martin Luther
King Park on Carlton Avenue is turned into a community fair. Southside
Ministries provides face painting, storytelling, games, a cake walk, and supper
to all who attend at no cost. It's a great way for the people of the South Side
to get together.
